Ode to Retro

Project Goals
Our clients, with busy schedules and two adorable little girls, dreamed of transforming their kitchen into a space that felt uniquely theirs.
With a clear sense of how they wanted to feel in their home, we teamed up to design a kitchen that reflected the creativity and charm of their family life.
The primary goal of this project was to improve the flow and functionality of their kitchen, with thoughtfully designed areas where parents and kids could work, play, and connect. At the top of their wish list were a kitchen island, custom storage, and a reimagined backdoor entryway.

“Working within a budget doesn’t mean compromising on quality or aesthetics; rather, it encourages creative solutions that resonate with the family’s lifestyle.”

Boundaries
In this bungalow-style house, the kitchen is the energetic ‘heart’ of the home, but it’s also the physical central point between the master bedroom, living room, and frequently used back entrance. This multi-functional space required some out-of-the-box thinking to ensure everything flowed seamlessly.
We needed to create hidden storage for shoes, coats, and everyday clutter, while carving out dedicated areas for baking and crafts. We decided the kitchen would be the perfect place for a new computer desk area, to keep technology close but still encourage togetherness.
To bring it all together, the family dreamed of a large window in the kitchen to brighten up the space and enhance the airy feel throughout.

Project Outcomes
Subtle at first glance but brimming with charm and intention, the newly remodeled kitchen and entryway have become a cherished part of the family’s daily routine.
To maximize function and create the illusion of taller ceilings, we incorporated floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. Carefully placed ceiling lights with a semi-flush, pendant-like design further elevate the room’s height while preserving its openness. This integrated lighting complements the natural light that now pours in from the large window above the kitchen sink. We also opted for a retro-inspired hood vent above the stove to complement the spacious feel and add a touch of personality.
To enhance the natural aesthetic, we used organic shapes and soothing hues. Soft, rounded ceiling lights echo the round knobs and handles in the kitchen, as well as the playful penny tiles.
We prioritized durable, easy-to-maintain materials that could handle the demands of an active household. Budget-friendly matte HI-MACS countertops and solid maple cabinetry stained with an opaque blue finish add style and luxury without compromising functionality.
The back entrance was reimagined with a concealed storage area and handy seating nook, complete with shoe and coat racks that keep clutter under control.
Finally, a thoughtfully integrated desk area was built into the kitchen to ensure that Wi-Fi connection doesn’t come at the cost of family connection.
The resulting space—including a primary entryway, kitchen, built-in office, and storage—balances practicality with personality, creating a bright and inviting space for true functionality without the visual clutter of busy family life.

“We love every single element of our new kitchen! Gone are the pinch points, angry doors, and awkward spaces. Now we have a beautiful, functional space that suits our family perfectly.”
